|Gold DofE Presentation by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh22nd February 2017|
CI Jordan Goodwin Stanley, CWO Tom Spender and CWO Katie Brammer (Biddulph sqn) after being presented with their gold DofE awards by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh at St James's Palace. The event was exclusively for Air Cadets with 99 receiving their awards in the Picture Gallery of the palace, attended by members of the ACO DofE team and guests of the cadets.

Cadet Dining In & Presentation Night

The Chimney House Hotel at Sandbach Heath played host to 230 Squadron Air Cadets on January 23rd when they held their annual Dining In and Cadet Presentation Night. A capacity gathering of 100 cadets, parents & guests attended the event.
Guests included Congleton Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Charles Booth, Wing Commander Toby Sawbridge the Commanding Officer of 230 Squadron Royal Air Force who is based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire & his wife Caroline. Wing Commander and Mrs Ralph Lloyd-Jones, past commanding officer of Staffordshire Wing Air Cadets, Squadron Leader & Mrs Stephen Holland, 230’s Wing Staff Officer & Sergeant Chris Goodier, an ex-230 Sqn cadet. President Mr Douglas Parker & his wife Hilary also attended. Master of Ceremonies was Flight Lieutenant Rod Goodier very ably assisted by Cadet Clara Jackson & Flight Lieutenant Eric Westwood.
The commanding officer of 230 Sqn Air Cadets, Pilot Officer Jon West welcomed the guests and spoke about his vision of how 230 Squadron will develop under his leadership over the coming years. Each year the CO makes a special “Thank You Award” to a member of staff or Team 230 who has made a significant contribution to the squadron. He presented the trophy jointly to Kate & Phil Bonney with grateful thanks for all their hard work over the past year. He was also delighted to make a surprise presentation to Wing Commander Ralf Lloyd-Jones on his retirement from 230 Sqn Air Cadets after many years of help and support to the Sqn.
A review was given by cadets who related their personal reflections from many of the highlights from the past year. These included visits to 230 Sqn RAF, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, many sporting events plus Easter & summer camps at home and abroad. Cadets also visited two airshows, lots of work in community plus flying & gliding, kayaking to mention but a few of the activities.
The main event of the evening was the presentation of trophies. As a big “thank you” on behalf of all the cadets small gifts of appreciation were presented to Charlotte Rous, Charlotte Nield, Ian Spender & Phil Bonney who between them attend squadron every parade night to run the canteen. A gift & thanks was also given to Mrs Christine Lloyd-Jones who meticulously records all the events cadets participate in which is what the annual awards are based on. A merit award was presented by Mrs Caroline Sawbridge to Cpl Joe Krinks. President Douglas Parker presented the 2015 St Mary’s Ex-serviceman’s Association award for “Enthusiasm” to Cadet Bethany McCusker. The Top Sports person trophy was presented to Corporal Ewan Ling by Wing Commander Ralph Lloyd-Jones. The Bernard Sandall Spitfire Trophy that is awarded to the best newcomer was presented by Wing Commander Sawbridge to Cadet Sam Kehoe. On behalf of 230 Sqn RAF Association Wing Commander Sawbridge also presented the Black Peter model Sunderland Flying Boat to the Most Improved Cadet, Cadet Jack Williams. The Amy Knight Aviators trophy was awarded to Cadet Tom Hodgetts. Mrs Janet Goodier presented the Tornado Tiger Trophy to the best NCO of the year, Sergeant Lucy Tkaczyk. Flight Lieutenant Eric Westwood was delighted to present the Colin Hingley Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme Trophy to Cadet Warrant Officer Tom Spender on gaining his Gold Award. Corporal Victoria Rogers won the Top Shot Award presented to her by Sergeant Chris Goodier.
The two top trophies were awarded to Cadet Clara Jackson and Flight Sergeant Daniel Bonney. Clara was awarded the Matthias Shield for her tireless community work in and around Congleton by Deputy Town Mayor Charles Booth. The 230 Squadron Cadet of the Year Award 2016 was won for the second successive year by Daniel and presented by Wing Commander Toby Sawbridge. All cadet winners also received a superb framed aircraft photo or print which is theirs to keep as the trophies are returned to the Squadron.
During the evening a raffle was held to help cadet funds and an auction of a limited edition of wine specially commissioned by 33 Squadron RAF for their centenary year.
